Based on information released by the North Carolina Employment Security Commission for August, 2006, Wake County has a workforce of 431,089 with an unemployment rate of 3.4%. In 1850, Dorothea Dix Hospital was opened in Raleigh. And, in 2008, Dix is scheduled to close and move the psychiatric hospital facility to Butner. Since the closing was announced, there have been several years of debate over the best use of this extraordinary 300-acre piece of green space.
