A Bit of North Carolina Tradition Arrives in Kuwait City
One of our family memories and traditions involves stopping by the Krispy Kreme doughnut shop on the corner of Person and Peace in Downtown Raleigh, hoping to catch the “Hot” sign glowing in the window. For the uninformed, the Hot sign means this — lurking behind the counter, by request, are hot doughnuts that are taken directly from the production line, dripping with an extraordinarily sugary and delicious coating. These hot delicacies absolutely melt in your mouth, and have often been described as “addictive.” My son is currently stationed in Kuwait, and here is his story about the Kuwaiti Krispy Kreme man. Krispy Kreme’s are a North Carolina treasure, and this mother appreciates the generosity of the Krispy Kreme Company that also calls North Carolina home (in Winston-Salem). Hope you enjoy the story.
10/20/06 - “Krispy Kreme is opening a store in Kuwait City on Monday. For the past few days, they have been running the machines at full capacity to get the staff used to the pace and process of making doughnuts. Once made, they are put into boxes by the half dozen and passed out on the streets of Kuwait City. Unfortunately, we are not able to go into town for anything, much less doughnuts, unless we are on official business.”
“John Ward, the store trainer, is from Winston-Salem and is a friend of a former officer in this brigade. John was able to get in touch with us here and arranged to bring doughnuts out to the troops. When we discussed how many to bring, I told him I have never seen too many Krispy Kreme doughnuts. He told me if he had a good production run, he’d try to bring a 100 dozen or so. Well, he must have had a GREAT production run, because he brought us 350 dozen freshly glazed doughnuts. Could life get any better? I am not real sure if he made more or not, but that is all the doughnuts his stretch Hummer Limo painted to loo like a Krispy Kreme box will hold.”
“John and fellow trainer Chris handed out 700 boxes of doughnuts in no time flat. I had the job of handing the bags out of the Limo to John, Chris and others who handed them to the troops. As the attached picture will show, I also had a chance to confirm the doughnuts were fit for human consumption. The soldiers, especially this one, enjoyed a taste of home and the break from the normal daily routine. It was, by far, the best Krispy Kreme doughnut (Ok, I admit it — make it a plural — doughnuts) I have ever had.”
